The Superfood To Eat: Quinoa

The Superfood To Eat: Quinoa

I want to start this article by thanking Dr. Oz for mentioning quinoa on his show a few months ago. I had never heard of this grain before and learned about it's health benefits when it was featured on the Oz show. This healthy grain has been an important part of my diet ever since.

When I was working out a while back, someone was talking to me about protein. I've been doing strength training and protein is especially important for gaining muscle. He felt I was getting a low amount of protein. I am now trying to get around 120 grams of protein each day, but it's easier said than done.

I've found that certain food choices do not agree with my stomach. Foods like whey, as beneficial as they are for some people, do not digest well for me. I had to find more food sources with protein that would not make me feel sick. That's why I'm thankful I found out about quinoa. These protein-rich grains were exactly what my diet was lacking.

I found that quinoa tastes great and can be incorporated in other dishes. Some examples include soups, salads or even as a side dish by itself. It also makes a great choice for a breakfast cereal. Quinoa is a food that's well tolerated, at least for me. You'd never know that it's a good source of protein, just from tasting it. But from what I've read, quinoa is one of the only plant-based proteins that's a complete protein.

As I continue to wrote about my superfoods (I plan to go to 10 different food items), I would like to hear some other comments of what others think of as their superfood. I said in an earlier post, diet is a personal thing. The same can be said for what healthy foods you think are best.
