Candy Used To Be My Weakness

I used to be an addict and would eat tons of candy, so you might be surprised that I no longer crave those foods at all. The other day, I walked down the candy aisle while trying to increase my steps for the day. I saw a bag of Skittles and thought to myself that the old me would have eaten the entire bag without even thinking about it.

I picked up the bag to look at the ingredients. As someone who follows a whole food plant-based diet, I wanted to see what kind of ingredients were used in foods I once consumed. The first ingredients listed are sugar and corn syrup. Other ingredients include modified corn starch, water, gelatin, and less than 2% of citric acid, malic acid, natural and artificial flavors, sunflower oil, colors (Red 40, Yellow 5, Yellow 6, Blue 1), and carnauba wax.

A look at the ingredients an a package of Skittles Gummies.

10 Years Since My Life Changing Physical

In a few weeks, it will be exactly ten years since I had my first physical since before college. That one physical altered my life from that moment on.

Many of you know my story, but it seems appropriate to remind my readers of why this appointment was so critical. I was morbidly obese, weighing in at well over 350 pounds. i was not taking care of myself, having neuropathy in my feet, feeing exhausted, having headaches, etc. I knew the doctor would tell me I had health issues and I did not want to know. I was pushed into this physical because the state of Connecticut was requiring it for workers who wanted to have cheaper premiums. I decided to finally face my fears and do the physical.

Not Giving In To Cravings

A few weeks ago, I wrote how I never have to worry about weight gain now. I know what I eat will keep my weight in the same range. I eat when I’m hungry and stop when I’m full.

Many people ask me about how not to give in to cravings. Although it’s not a problem for me now, I wanted to offer some tips for others who are dealing with it, especially those new to the plant based diet.

Weight Gain Is Never A Worry

Throughout the pandemic, we’ve all heard talk about how people gained weight while eating processed foods and not exercising. I was one of the few to stay consistent throughout the entire pandemic. At a recent physical, my doctor was surprised to say I didn’t gain any weight during the last year. Nearly every one of his patients had gained weight.

I recently checked my weight at the local gym. I hardly ever step on the scale but thought, let’s see what it reads. 198 pounds... this is consistent to the weight I lost while doing all that running and marathons. Even with an injured knee and not going at cardio the way I was 6 months ago, my weight stayed the same.

Rich took this photo after a recent workout.

It Wasn’t My Intention, But I Did Lose A Little Weight With The Potato Challenge

It’s hard to eat potatoes and GBOMBS foods (greens, beans, onions, mushrooms, berries and seeds) and not lose weight. I basically avoided foods like nut butters and avocados for the month of June. It was a good learning experience and I do like to challenge myself. However, I did miss my breakfast of oatmeal and especially the almond butter.

The weight I lost was due to keeping my same level of activity and not increasing my calories. I am happy to be back at my normal routine. I’m still highly active but I do require a lot of calories. That’s why I love bing plant based. I can eat a lot, asI always had a big appetite, and not have to worry about gaining weight.
