Is There Sugar In It?

Is There Sugar In It?

Did you ever notice that sugar is snuck into so many foods?

A few months ago, I purchased an almond butter from Walmart. It said all natural and it needed to be stirred. I neglected to read the food label until I got home. There was sugar in it. Target and other stores had the same problem with their almond butters. I finally found an almond butter without sugar at Whole Foods Market. Why do manufacturers think you need sugar in natural almond butter?

This is just an example of the many more foods that have sugar in them that you don't even think about. Let's look at pasta sauces. Any sauce from the supermarkets will most likely have sugar in them, sometimes, way more than a candy bar! Who ever would think that they would use so much of it. But sugar is addictive, and the more you consume, the more you'll want of it. This way, the manufacturers will have you craving more of their food.

Protein powders are other foods you have to be careful about. So many of them have sugar in them. If someone is beginning to workout and decide they need the extra protein, I feel bad for those that reach for the protein powders with sugar in them. If you're working out to become healthier, you don't need the added sugar.

There are other problems with hidden sugars… you might not know they are in your food because of the hidden names. Aside from the obvious, high fructose corn syrup, there's also sucrose, fructose, glucose, dextrose, galactose, lactose and maltose, among many others.

Too much sugar causes so many health issues, including diabetes and obesity. The average person only needs about 6 teaspoons per day for women, which provides about 100 calories and 9 teaspoons a day for men, which is about 150 calories. The average adult consumes 22 teaspoons per day; no wonder why obesity is such an epidemic.

You should get in the practice of reading food labels or better yet avoid processed foods. If you eliminate processed foods, you'll know exactly what ingredient are in the foods you eat. You will more than likely maintain a healthy weight too!
